Saira Afzal Tarar Addressing a Press Conference About PMDC in Islamabad

Minister of State for National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination, Saira Afzal Tarar has said that the new management committee has been given full powers in order to ensure transparency and merit. The government will take all measures for the betterment and well being of the people and Medical profession new management committee will primarily focus on transparent election and will give a road map in next two weeks, while she was addressing a press conference here on Monday in Islamabad. She said that a new management committee has been constituted which is entrusted to hold elections within 120 days. The committee is comprised of the most eminent and well reputed top professionals of the medical and dental profession namely; Major General Retired Azher Kiyani, Professor Abid Farooqi, Professor Nadeem Rizvi, one representative each from Ministry of Law and Ministry of Finance. The basic pre-condition for membership of the management committee was that none of the members had served at any time in PMDC during the last five years. This measure is meant to ensure transparency and foreclose possibility of conflict of interest. Saira Afzal Tarar said that the size of the new council under the ordinance has been significantly reduced and now there will be 35 members as against the earlier 81, and in line with recommendations of the three member committee constituted by the Islamabad High Court, the new council shall have equal representation from all provinces and the public and private sector medical and dental colleges. Minister told that in order to ensure transparent, free and fair elections, we have requested the Honorable Chief Justice of the Supreme Court to nominate a member of the management committee. Saira Afzal Tarar further said that the Government under the constitution is mandated to safeguard and preserve the health and well being of the people and hence the most important stakeholder in ensuring that quality medi-care services are provided to the people through a strong, transparent and efficient regulatory framework. .The only way forward to secure the future of doctors and medical students was to reorganize the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council in such a manner that it regains its lost reputation within the country as well as at the international level. She said that the Government had two options before it- either o be by-stander and let the medical profession which deals with the lives and well being of the people, go down the drain, or to act in public interest and save this noble profession from vested interests. She said that people of Pakistan and the medical and dental community has heaved a sigh of relief and we look forward to brighter future where decisions are taken only and only based on merit, and the era of vested interests, corruption, mismanagement due to which thousands of medical professionals and students were suffering is now over. She appealed to the media to support this noble cause in national interest.
