Soft screening of Pakistans Population Emergency

 Islamabad February 17th , 2015: Mrs. Saira Afzal Tarar, Minister of State for Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination convened a meeting to discuss and issues related to population sector in Pakistan. During the meeting screening of documentary on “Population Emergency” was carried out. The documentary is a health and population policy and systems presentation, which features Pakistan’s five-decade long commitment to Universal Health Coverage for Family Planning and prospects for change after the 18th Constitutional Amendment. The documentary has been made by the NGO think tanks and Heartfile. Speaking at the occasion the Minister of Healthreiterated “population is a major issue for the country, we welcome this documentary and have been looking forward to its release. We will formulate a committee to take its recommendations forward”. Secretary Health, Mr. Muhammad Ayub Shaikh stated “the recommendations presented in the documentary are a masterpiece. These are also timely, and can be used one by one to reach goals both at the federal and provincial level” adding further he said that “we will set up an institutional arrangements to implement the recommendations” The most salient part of the documentary is the manner in which it outlines the role of the Federal Government post devolution, in particular the responsibilities related to supply chain management, information systems and normative agencies. It was a joint voice that Pakistan must stabilize population in proportion to demand and scarcity of resources. This is not just an imperative for women’s health, wellbeing and poverty reduction, but necessary for national progress and development and for the security of our nation”. The soft meeting was attended by expert demographers, public health experts, donors and government officials.
