Federal Health Minister Saira Afzal Tarar Condoles the Sudden Demise of WHO Regional Head Dr. Fikri


 Islamabad October 18, 2017. Federal Minister for National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination Saira Afzal Tarar expressed her deepest condolences over the sudden demise of Regional Director of the World Health Organization Dr. Mahmoud Fikri who passed away due to cardiac arrest on Tuesday while on his way to Uruguay to attend a meeting. The Minister said this is a huge loss to the global health fraternity.

Dr. Fikri had been elected as the Regional Director of the WHO Eastern Mediterranean region only this year and was proactively leading the region comprising of 22 countries in improving the health status of its people, said the Minister. He was a great friend of Pakistan and visited the country twice during the current year. Most recently he was in Pakistan last week to join me in leading one of the most successful Regional Committee meetings of World Health Organization participated by Health Ministers and senior officials of member states.

Dr. Mahmoud Fikri’s services to global health shall always be remembered. I join my colleagues in the Ministry of National Health Services in conveying sympathies to the entire WHO staff and the bereaved family, added the Minister. Praying that the Almighty rest his soul in eternal peace and grant courage and fortitude to his loved ones to bear the irreparable loss.
